An online reminder service such as ReminderMails offers a couple of main benefits over downloading a program to your computer.
1. ReminderMails sends you reminders even when your computer is turned off which is great if you use a webmail account such as (gmail or hotmail) or want an account configured to send mails to your phone.
2. When you change your computer, a downloaded program has to be migrated (or worse upgraded, lots of programs had problems moving from Windows XP to Windows Vista) where as the ReminderMails service will still manage to send you the reminders without even having to be told you have changed your computer.
